It can be caused by a variety of factors, including fetal kidney problems, placental insufficiency, ruptured membranes, or maternal conditions such as preeclampsia or chronic hypertension.

Implications of Abnormal Amniotic Fluid:

  1. Fetal Growth Restriction: Both polyhydramnios and oligohydramnios can lead to fetal growth restriction. In polyhydramnios, the excess fluid can compress the fetus, restricting its growth. Conversely, in oligohydramnios, the reduced fluid volume may limit the fetus's space for movement and growth.

  2. Preterm Birth: Abnormal amniotic fluid levels increase the risk of preterm birth. Polyhydramnios can put pressure on the uterus, leading to early contractions and premature labor. Oligohydramnios, on the other hand, can cause complications such as placental abruption or umbilical cord compression, necessitating early delivery.

  3. Fetal Distress: Amniotic fluid acts as a protective cushion for the fetus. Any abnormalities in its volume or composition can compromise the fetus's well-being. Oligohydramnios, for instance, can lead to compression of the umbilical cord, reducing oxygen and nutrient supply to the fetus and resulting in fetal distress.

  4. Congenital Anomalies: In some cases, abnormal amniotic fluid levels can indicate the presence of fetal abnormalities or congenital anomalies. For instance, polyhydramnios may be associated with gastrointestinal or neurological defects, while oligohydramnios can be linked to renal or urinary tract abnormalities.
